Obituary for Ronald A. Szot

Ronald Szot, 62, of Dunkirk, passed away unexpectedly at home Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021.

He was born Dec. 16, 1958, in Dunkirk, the son of Rita (Wlodarek) Szot and the late Louis Szot.

Ronald attended St. Hedwig’s Elementary School, and graduated in 1976 from Cardinal Mindzenty High School with honors. He then at-tended Notre Dame University and graduated with honors in 1980 with a degree in law and government. He received his Juris Doctotate from Syracuse University of Law in 1982.

Ronald worked as a law clerk for Walter Drag and as an attorney in several law firms over the years, including Mattar and Mattar in Buffalo, and with David Civilette in Dunkirk. He also held positions in Dunkirk City Hall as city clerk and city attorney for several Dunkirk Mayors. He also served as Chautauqua County Legislator for several years. Recently he had been working as an attorney in the Chautauqua County Family Court system, and had his own private practice.

Ronald was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Irish and returned to his alma mater yearly to attend football games.His passion away from law was photography, and he shared his passion with the communities in Chautauqua County, photographing the games and the athletes of the sports teams of the many schools in the county. He has left a legacy of photos for the parents and families and athletes of these teams to be enjoyed for a lifetime.

His memberships include Blessed Mary Angela Ro-man Catholic Parish, the American Bar Association, and was also an active member of the Dunkirk Democratic Party.

Surviving in addition to his mother is a sister, Carol A. Batt of Buffalo; his daughter, Aleyna Szot Westling of Fredonia; along with several cousins.

In addition to his father he is preceded by several aunts and uncles.

Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 E. Doughty St., in Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrate on Monday morning at 10 a.m., in Blessed Mary Angela Roman Catholic Church of St. Hyacinth, 295 Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk.

Interment will be in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery.
