Richard Paul Spekczynski, 83, of Dunkirk, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the Buffalo VA Medical Center, with his wife by his side.

Richard was born on December 2, 1939, in Dunkirk, to Anthonyand Elizabeth Spekczynski.

He graduated from Cardinal Mindszenty High School (Class of 1957).

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Bonnie V. Spekczynski; his son, John (Mary) Spekczynski; daughters Susan Spekczynski and Barb Azzarella; and stepdaughters Linda (Dale) Bobik and Debra (Michael) Sheffield. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A proud veteran of both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army, Richard’s distinctive service to his Country began at the age of 17 and spanned 20-years. While an infantry soldier in the Vietnam War, his bravery in combat earned him several commendations and medals. He was most proud to have received three Bronze Star Medals for Valor. Richard retired from the Army having attained the rank of Sergeant. His patriotism remained strong long after retirement, as his brothers with the 31st Infantry Regiment “Polar Bears” can attest.

After retiring from the military, Richard joined the custodial staff at SUNY Fredonia where he was affectionately known as “Sarge” throughout his many years of service.

Not only was Richard an employee at the university, but he also enjoyed taking courses in history and philosophy.

In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Spekczynski Jr.; his daughter, Debbie Spekczynski; and grandson, Michael Bobik. Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday from 2-4:30 at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street, Prayer and Military service starting at 4:30.
