Leonard Anthony Drozdziel, 87, of Dunkirk died September 20, 2014 at Buffalo General Hospital. He was born October 19, 1926 in Dunkirk to the late Anthony and Mary Drozdziel. Leonard was a man dedicated to family, community, and work. After serving in the United States Army during WWII as a military policeman, he joined the Dunkirk City Police Department, retiring in 1982 as a police lieutenant. Leonard, known for his goodness and fairness, was a "good guy cop" willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt and a second chance. Leonard loved and cared deeply for his family. A devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, being with his family gave him great joy and pride! An avid Syracuse and Notre Dame fan, Leonard enthusiastically followed their sports teams. He also enjoyed reading the Evening OBSERVER from cover to cover! He is survived by four children: Daniel (Shirley) Drozdiel; David (Karen) Drozdziel; Deborah Drozdziel (Gary) Mucha; and Paul (Deborah) Drozdziel. He also leaves behind three grand-daughters: Lauren Drozdiel, Kathryn Drozdiel, and Marissa Drozdziel. Leonard will be sadly missed by his good friend, Dolores Raczek. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Dorothy (Pienta) Drozdziel, whom he married on June 21, 1952, and his sister, Frances Drozdziel. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home, 56 E. Doughty St., Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hedwig. "Pops" will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
