Clara Layman, 95, of Fredonia, died Sunday afternoon, January 11, 2015, at Fredonia Place. She was born July 10, 1919, in Westfield, daughter of the late Samuel and Sara (Riscile) Gambino. Following WWII, she married Chester Layman on Thanksgiving Day 1946. During WWII Clara worked at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, and after raising her sons, and then worked for Mills Bakery in Fredonia and Dunkirk, the Genovese's Coffee Shop. Clara was also active in the woman's bowling league at the Columbus Club. Surviving are her sons, Michael (Barbara) Layman, Robert (Pam Racino) Layman, Richard (Atsuko) Layman; grandchildren, Michelle Witzky, Jennifer Bodkin, Marcy Slone, Jenna Layman, Brooke Layman, Sam Layman, Nathan Layman, Sara Layman, Emily Layman; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Witzky, Ethan and Josh Bodkin. Preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband Chester Layman who died July 29, 2014; brothers, Joseph, George and Jack Gambino; sisters, France Shreve, Patty Barber; and granddaughter Leigh Layman. A memorial mass will be held at a later date to be announced by the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk.
