Mary Zacharzewski, 97, of Dunkirk died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital.
She was born Oct. 18, 1918 in Dunkirk, daughter of the late Thomas A. and Veronica (Skiba) Phelka.
A veteran of WWII, Mary served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46, and received the American Theater and Victory Medals, and Asiatic Pacific Medal.
Mary retired from J.C. Penney Department Store in Dunkirk after 30 years.
Her memberships included Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish Church of St. Hyacinth, oldest member of Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Post #62 and Dunkirk Senior Citizen Center.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling and gardening.
Surviving is her daughter Audrey (John) Miga of Dunkirk; grandchildren Brian (Annie) Miga of Mukilteo, Washington and Melissa (Harley) Smith of Silver Creek; great-grandchildren Sophia, Lily and Charlotte Miga; Ava, Addison and Jaxson Smith; sister Blanche Green of Buffalo and brother Frank (Shirley) Phelka of Florida; along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, are her husband Aloysius Zacharzewski, who died Dec. 22, 1988; sisters Angeline Mackowiak and Loretta Maslach; brothers Joseph Phelka, Stanley Phelka, Stephen Pelka and Harry Pchelka.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish Church of St. Hyacinth. Interment will be in St. Hyacinth's Cemetery.
