Helen S. Smoczynski

Helen Sophie Smoczynski, 90, of Dunkirk died peacefully on Friday, February 12, 2016 at home. Helen was born May 10, 1925 in Dunkirk, NY, daughter of Michael and Sophie (Palka) Siembieda.

She married Vincent D. Smoczynski on February 15, 1947. They had three children - Karl, Robert, and Judith. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward Siembieda, Stanley Siembieda, Mathew Siembieda, Anthony Siembieda; sister Irene Siembieda Kota; and daughter Judith Ann Smoczynski (1974). She is survived by two sons, Karl Smoczynski (Anne) of Queensbury, NY and Robert Smoczynski of Dunkirk; her grandson, Eric Smoczynski; her grand-daughter, Laura Smoczynski Horan; her husband, Michael Horan; and two great-grandchildren, Julia and Jackson Horan.

The Smoczynski Family were a long-time members of St. Hedwig's R. C. Church (Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish). Helen was an active member in the St. Hedwig's Rosary Society, St. Hedwig's Ladies' Society, Sacred Heart Society, and Member of Christ's Child Society. For many years, she was a Eucharistic Minister as well as a Visiting Eucharistic Minister.

Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant everything to her and she was a wonderful mother-in-law.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home at 56 East Doughty St., Dunkirk, with funeral service on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hedwig.
